Vowel Harmony
Hungarian words like to match their endings to the vowels already inside them. It's like the word wants everything to sound the same!
🎵 What is vowel harmony?
In Hungarian, every vowel lives in one of two groups — back vowels and front vowels. When you add an ending to a word, you have to pick the version of that ending that matches the group the word belongs to.
Think of it like a music band — the ending has to play in the same key as the rest of the word! 🎸

The ending -ban / -ben means "in". Watch how it changes:
ház(house)→házban
-bankert(garden)→kertben
-beniskola(school)→iskolában
-banerdő(forest)→erdőben
-ben📏 The simple rule
If a word has a, á, o, ó, u, ú → use the back version of the ending (like -ban)
If a word has e, é, i, í, ö, ő, ü, ű → use the front version of the ending (like -ben)
💡 Good news: You don't need to memorise all of this right now! The more Hungarian you read and hear, the more natural it will feel. Native speakers just know which ending sounds right — and soon you will too!
