Magic Endings
Hungarian has a superpower — instead of adding extra words, it adds little endings to words to change their meaning!
✨ Big idea: In English we use lots of separate words — "in the house", "my house", "into the house". In Hungarian, you just snap an ending onto the word ház (house) and you're done. These endings are called suffixes, and once you get the hang of them, the whole language starts to click!
🏠 Ownership — Who does it belong to?
In English we say "my", "your", "his". In Hungarian, you just add an ending to the thing itself!
| Ending | Means | Example | In English |
|---|---|---|---|
| -m | my | ház → házam | house → my house |
| -d | your | ház → házad | house → your house |
| -ja / -a | his / her | ház → háza | house → his/her house |
| -nk | our | ház → házunk | house → our house |
| -tok / -tek | your (group) | ház → házatok | house → your house (group) |
| -juk / -uk | their | ház → házuk | house → their house |
🧠 Think of it like a sticker you put on the word. Instead of saying "my house" you say "house-my" — házam!
📍 Location — Where is it?
Hungarian has different endings depending on whether something is inside, on top of, or near something else.
| Ending | Means | Example | In English |
|---|---|---|---|
| -ban / -ben | inside | ház → házban | house → in the house |
| -on / -en / -ön | on top of | asztal → asztalon | table → on the table |
| -nál / -nél | next to / at | iskola → iskolánál | school → at the school |
🧠 Imagine the ending is a tiny GPS — it tells you exactly where something is!
⏰ Tense — When does it happen?
Hungarian verbs change their ending to show if something is happening now, already happened, or will happen later.
| Ending | Means | Example | In English |
|---|---|---|---|
| -ok / -ek | I do it (now) | tanul → tanulok | study → I study |
| -tam / -tem | I did it (past) | tanul → tanultam | study → I studied |
| -ni fogok | I will do it (future) | tanul → tanulni fogok | study → I will study |
🧠 The ending is like a time stamp on the word — it tells you when the action happens!
🎯 Direction — Where is it going?
When something moves somewhere, Hungarian adds a special ending to show where it's headed.
| Ending | Means | Example | In English |
|---|---|---|---|
| -ba / -be | into | ház → házba | house → into the house |
| -ra / -re | onto | asztal → asztalra | table → onto the table |
| -ból / -ből | out of | ház → házból | house → out of the house |
🧠 Think of these endings as arrows — they show which direction something is moving!
