Pronouns

Pronouns are words like I, you, and they — they stand in for people's names so you don't have to repeat them.

✨ Cool fact: In Hungarian, you often don't even need to say the pronoun! The ending of the verb already tells you who's doing the action. So instead of saying "Én tanulok" (I am studying), you can just say "Tanulok" and everyone knows you mean I.

Hungarian: én

Én tanulok.

I am studying.

💡 This is you! Én means 'I' — the person speaking.

you (one person)

Hungarian: te

Te beszélsz.

You are speaking.

💡 Use te when talking to one friend, a kid, or someone you know well.

he / she / it

Hungarian: ő

Ő olvas.

He / She is reading.

💡 Hungarian doesn't have separate words for he and she — ő means both! Context tells you which one.

Hungarian: mi

Mi eszünk.

We are eating.

💡 Mi means you and at least one other person together.

you (a group)

Hungarian: ti

Ti játszotok.

You all are playing.

💡 Use ti when you're talking to more than one person at the same time.

ők

they

Hungarian: ők

Ők futnak.

They are running.

💡 Ők is used for a group of people you're talking about.

maga / ön

you (formal)

Hungarian: maga / ön

Ön dolgozik?

Are you working?

💡 These are polite forms of 'you' — like saying 'sir' or 'ma'am'. Use them with teachers, doctors, or strangers.
